This post is a quick read to give you my top quick cook tips. If you’d like to go into more depth and read how I formed the habit of home cooking then this post is for you: How I Formed the Habit of Home Cooking

1.Plan your shop

With delivery slots like gold dust during lockdown and a trip to the supermarket not being the most pleasant of experiences, it is more important than ever to plan our meals. Know what you want to eat over the next few days, or weeks, and get everything you need for those meals.
Keep a shopping list on your phone and update as you run out of things and when planning your meals.  If you have Alexa then utilise her shopping list feature and then get her to email or text you the list. When writing your list it’s a good idea to separate it out by the area in the supermarket e..g all the fruit and veg first and bread last as they are usually the first and last aisles in the supermarket respectively.

2. Get the basics

Having the basics in the home means you will always be able to rustle up a meal. Make sure you have:
  • herbs
  • spices
  • cream cheese
  • tins
  • frozen veg/meat/fish
  • bread
  • milk
  • eggs
  • easy to cook veg to ensure you get your five a day!

3. Prep as soon as you get your shopping home

Prep your food as soon as you get shopping home. Roast veg and refrigerate, freeze extra portions of food, grate cheese – keep some in the fridge and freeze the rest in portions sizes, freeze extra bread, meat or fish, cook your carbs e.g. rice, quinoa, baked potatoes so they are ready when you need them and freeze extra portions.

4. Cook Quit Kit

These are the items we would not be without:
Bullet blender – for quick sauces, easy chopping and soups
Containers – to keep your prepared food (but you can use bowls if you need to)
Grater – quick to use and a great to add more veg to your meals
Microwave – fab for everything
Scales – keep them on your counter
Post it notes and pen – put recipes you like stick it inside  a kitchen cupboard door.
Freezer bags and permanent pen – to keep track of what’s in your freezer and to freeze food in portions so you don’t have to defrost the whole lot
